Global Architecture - Jerusalem Israel 2016

The Western Wall is an ancient limestone wall in the Old City of Jerusalem. It was originally built by Herod the Great as part of the expansion of the Second Jewish Temple around 19 BCE. The site is a major holy place for prayer and pilgrimage, featuring massive ashlar blocks and a large open plaza for visitors.

The image shows the massive stone blocks of the retaining wall under a clear blue sky. In the background, the golden Dome of the Rock and the Al-Fakhariyya Minaret stand above the wall line. People are gathered in the plaza area, some standing close to the wall for prayer while others walk across the open stone ground.

The architecture features Herodian masonry characterized by large rectangular stones with drafted margins. This style was most popular during the late Second Temple period in the 1st century BCE. The facade shows centuries of weathering and vegetation growing between the ancient cracks.
