The trip to Marrakesh Morocco 2009

Global Architecture - The World Heritage Ait-Ben Haddou Morocco 2021

Ait-Ben-Haddou is a striking example of southern Moroccan earthen clay architecture, known as a ksar. This fortified village, or ksar, showcases traditional pre-Saharan construction techniques, with buildings made from rammed earth and mudbrick. The site dates back to the 17th century and served as a vital trading post along ancient caravan routes between the Sahara and Marrakech.

The architecture is characterized by its high defensive walls, corner towers, and tightly clustered houses, some of which rise several stories high. The structures feature minimal ornamentation, with small windows and narrow alleyways designed to provide shade and protection from the harsh desert climate. The use of local materials and organic forms blends seamlessly with the surrounding arid landscape, creating a harmonious and functional design.
